On January 7 (local time), President Lee Jae-myung stated that the issue of China's "Korean Wave Ban" (Hallyu Ban) will be "resolved gradually, step by step, and in an orderly manner."
During a press conference at the Shanghai Press Center while on a state visit to China, President Lee was asked when he expected to see concrete results regarding the Hallyu Ban. He responded, "The Chinese government has consistently claimed that there is no such ban, but this time, there was a difference in their wording."
President Lee explained, "President Xi Jinping said during the summit, 'Three feet of ice did not freeze all at once, so how could it melt all at once? Fruit ripens and falls when its time comes.' I believe that is an accurate description." He added, "Spring does not arrive suddenly either. Time and process are necessary," and continued, "Since President Xi instructed the working-level departments to engage in concrete discussions, I believe actual consultations will take place."
However, President Lee expressed optimism, saying, "Within the possible scope, this issue will be resolved gradually, step by step, and in an orderly manner," and added, "I believe this is not just a sign of resolution, but a clear expression of intent." He further explained, "The timing, method, sectors, and targets will differ, and since the nature of a socialist system means that unlimited openness is not possible, we should also understand their position that they cannot leave everything completely unregulated."
President Lee also remarked, "Specific consultations will be necessary," and added, "We have spent many years at a standstill, but if we proceed gradually and smoothly without rushing, I believe we can make progress."
