Hongcheon County Receives Governor’s Commendation for Contributions to Railway Development

Hongcheon County in Gangwon Province received the 2025 Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Governor's Commendation in the field of railway development, in recognition of its contributions to the Yongmun-Hongcheon Metropolitan Railroad construction project.

The Yongmun-Hongcheon Metropolitan Railroad construction project was selected as a subject for a preliminary feasibility study by the Ministry of Economy and Finance in January 2024. On December 22, 2025, the project achieved a significant milestone by passing the preliminary feasibility study after being reviewed by the 12th Evaluation Committee for Fiscal Projects of the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

During the preliminary feasibility study process, Hongcheon County focused on addressing the major challenge of low economic feasibility, which had been frequently raised as a concern. The county also worked to enhance the policy evaluation by identifying project-specific features that reflect the unique local conditions and characteristics of Hongcheon County.

In addition, the county made frequent visits to the National Assembly, relevant central government agencies, and the National Railroad Authority to explain the necessity of the project, while also engaging in various external promotional activities to continuously convey the aspirations and voices of local residents regarding the construction of the Hongcheon Railroad.

Notably, the successful passage of the preliminary feasibility study is considered to have been made possible by the joint efforts of both the public and the government.

At every major event and festival in the region, there was a shared hope for attracting the Yongmun-Hongcheon Metropolitan Railroad. People from all walks of life, regardless of age or gender, actively came together through numerous statements and petitions.

Despite inclement weather, the community also demonstrated its commitment to bringing the railroad to Hongcheon by continuing relay promotional campaigns at the Sejong Government Complex.

Jang Yonggi, Head of the Future Growth Promotion Team, said, "I believe this institutional commendation was awarded thanks to the collective efforts of Hongcheon County residents who came together as one to help the Yongmun-Hongcheon Metropolitan Railroad pass the preliminary feasibility study. We will continue to thoroughly prepare for subsequent tasks, including the early commencement of construction and development of the station area."
