Kim Jaewon on 'Yoon Again' Go Sungguk Joining: "Just One Among a Million Party Members"

YouTuber Go Sungguk Joins People Power Party, Sparks Supreme Council Speculation
Kim Jonghyuk: "Rumors of Appointment as Nominated Supreme Council Member"
Kim Jaewon Denies: "Never Proposed Any Role Assignment"

YouTuber Go Sungguk, who has advocated for the so-called "Yoon Again" movement, recently joined the People Power Party, leading to speculation in some circles that he may become a Supreme Council member. In response, Kim Jaewon, the Supreme Council member of the same party who facilitated Go's entry, stated, "I have never thought about assigning any role to Go nor have I made such an offer," adding, "Go has never made any requests or expressed any intentions in that regard." In an interview on January 6 with YTN Radio's "Kim Junwoo's News Jeonmyeonseungbu," Kim explained, "Go joined the party with the intention of supporting it as a member."

However, Kim Jaewon, a Supreme Council member of the same party, refuted this by stating, "I have never thought about assigning any role to Go nor have I made such an offer." Yonhap News

When the host remarked, "There are claims that Go's joining the party was orchestrated by you," Kim responded, "Dr. Go Sungguk expressed his intention to join and did so himself. About three weeks ago, while we were on a broadcast together, I told him, 'When we competed in the presidential election, our party's membership numbers were overwhelmingly lower than those of the Democratic Party.' The Democratic Party claims to have 2.5 million members, while our party only had 700,000 members during the presidential election." He continued, "If we don't overcome this disadvantage, it will be very difficult for us. That's why many people have been encouraged to join, and Dr. Go Sungguk said, 'Then I will join,' so to my knowledge, that's how he became a member."

When asked whether he had any information about speculation that Go might be given a party position, Kim replied, "No one discussed or consulted with others about his joining the party. Such claims are completely untrue." He added, "I never asked Dr. Go Sungguk about his reasons for joining, but aside from his intention to help the party as a member, he has never said anything else, and neither the party leadership nor anyone else has ever expressed or discussed such ideas."

Kim emphasized, "We have been promoting the fact that we have reached one million members, and Go joined as one among those one million. He has never been mentioned as being requested or expected to take on any greater role. This is the first time I am hearing such malicious claims."

On January 5, Go Sungguk submitted his application for party membership to Kim Jaewon in a video released on his YouTube channel, Go Sungguk TV. Go explained, "Three weeks ago, when Supreme Council member Kim Jaewon appeared on our show, the topic of joining the party came up. When I asked for his opinion, he said, 'I really hope you join. I will personally accept your application.' So I contacted him and told him I had decided to join, and he could come and get my application." During the broadcast, Go joked, "Does this mean I am now part of the Kim Jaewon faction?" to which Kim replied, "No, I am now part of the Go Sungguk faction."

On January 6, former Supreme Council member Kim Jonghyuk raised suspicions in an interview with YTN Radio's "Kim Junwoo's News Jeonmyeonseungbu," saying, "Bringing him into the party must mean that he will be given some role," and added, "Rumor has it that there is still a nominated Supreme Council member position left, and perhaps he is being considered for that."

Go Sungguk is classified as having far-right tendencies, as he has defended former President Yoon Suk Yeol's emergency martial law and, ahead of the one-year anniversary of martial law, criticized calls within the People Power Party for an apology regarding martial law. He has also justified acts of violence against law enforcement by praising the "people's right to resist" in reference to the riot at the Western District Court, which was carried out by supporters protesting the issuance of an arrest warrant for former President Yoon.
