Payments Begin at Midnight on January 22
General Deadline: January 25, Transportation-Vulnerable: January 28
Automatic Cancellation if Deadline Missed
Korail announced on January 7 that it will begin accepting train ticket reservations for the Lunar New Year holiday starting on January 15.
The reservations apply to trains operating for six days during the Lunar New Year holiday period, from February 13 to 18. Only registered railway members can make reservations through the Korail Talk mobile application or the dedicated holiday reservation webpage on the official website.
Starting this Lunar New Year, Korail has extended the reservation period from the previous two days to three days, and has doubled its web server capacity. These measures are intended to distribute user traffic and stabilize the servers.
Advance Reservations for Transportation-Vulnerable Groups: January 15-16
Senior citizens aged 65 and older, registered persons with disabilities, and national merit recipients eligible for transportation support can make advance reservations on January 15 and 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. On January 15, reservations will be available for the Gyeongbu, Gyeongjeon, Gyeongbuk, Daegu, Chungbuk, Jungbunaeryuk, Donghae, and Gyoe lines. On January 16, reservations are available for the Honam, Jeolla, Gangneung, Janghang, Jungang, Yeongdong, Taebaek, Seohae, Gyeongchun, and Mokpo-Boseong lines. If internet access is difficult, reservations can be made via the dedicated holiday reservation phone line.
Advance reservations are only available when the transportation-vulnerable individual is the passenger. The ticket will display the passenger’s name. In the case of fraudulent use, the individual will be excluded from advance reservations for the next holiday period. In fact, during ticket inspections last Chuseok, 65 individuals were found to have violated the rules by not boarding themselves and were excluded from advance reservations for this Lunar New Year.
General Reservations: January 19-21
General reservations for all citizens will be open for three days, from January 19 to 21, between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m.
On January 19, reservations will be available for the Honam, Jeolla, Janghang, Jungang, Seohae, and Mokpo-Boseong lines. On January 20, reservations are available for the Gyeongjeon, Gyeongbuk, Daegu, Chungbuk, Jungbunaeryuk, Donghae, Gangneung, Yeongdong, Taebaek, Gyeongchun, and Gyoe lines. On January 21, reservations will be available for the Gyeongbu line.
Payments from January 22; Automatic Cancellation if Deadline Missed
Ticket payments can be made starting at midnight on January 22. The payment deadline is January 28 for advance reservations by transportation-vulnerable groups, and January 25 for general reservations. If payment is not completed within the deadline, the reservation will be automatically canceled and the seat will be sequentially allocated to those on the waiting list.
For transportation-vulnerable individuals who have difficulty making online payments, payment can be made by phone through the railway customer center or in person at a station ticket counter. For tickets paid by phone, passengers must bring identification and collect their tickets at the station counter before boarding the train.
Lee Minseong, Head of Customer Marketing at Korail, stated, "We will do our utmost to ensure a stable and smooth reservation process so that customers returning home for the Lunar New Year can begin their journeys in good spirits."
