As U.S. President Donald Trump revealed territorial ambitions toward Greenland, a Danish territory, following Venezuela, major European countries have stepped up to support Greenland and Denmark, pushing back against his intentions.
According to Bloomberg and Reuters on the 6th (local time), seven countries- the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and Denmark- expressed solidarity with Greenland and Denmark through a joint statement.
In the statement, they declared, "Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland, and only Denmark and Greenland have the authority to decide matters concerning Denmark and Greenland."
They also stated, "The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has made it clear that the Arctic is a top priority, and European allies are strengthening their response," urging the United States to cooperate by emphasizing that security in the Arctic should be achieved through collective efforts by the NATO alliance.
Separately, French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated the sovereignty of Greenland and Denmark during a press conference and local media interview at the 'Coalition of Willing' summit for Ukraine support held in Paris, France, on the same day.
Neighboring Nordic countries of Denmark also issued a solidarity statement in the name of their foreign ministers that afternoon. They jointly emphasized, "Only Denmark and Greenland should independently decide on matters concerning Greenland," adding, "We have all taken measures to strengthen deterrence and defense in the region."
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, a NATO member state, and is under NATO protection. Although President Trump has repeatedly expressed his intention to annex Greenland, it has been widely believed that it would be impossible for the United States, as a NATO member, to forcibly occupy Danish Greenland, which is also a member. However, with the United States' shocking military invasion of Venezuela and its overt territorial ambitions toward Greenland, tensions surrounding Greenland are rising.
