Promotion of Crop Pest and Disease Control
and Dissemination of New Technologies
Suncheon City in South Jeolla Province announced that, amid ongoing damage to open-field fruit farms caused by abnormal weather due to climate change, it has secured a budget of 1 billion KRW from national, provincial, and city funds to proactively support local farmers in response to these conditions.
Extreme weather events such as unseasonal cold, heatwaves, and heavy rainfall have become more frequent due to climate change, resulting in continuous damage to fruit farms, including cold injury during flowering, the spread of pests and diseases, and fruit drop. As a result, farmers are facing increased management instability, and there is an urgent need to establish a stable production base, highlighting the necessity for a systematic response.
In response, Suncheon City has secured more than 1 billion KRW in funding-400 million KRW from national and provincial sources and 600 million KRW from the city budget-to implement a variety of support programs aimed at minimizing agricultural damage caused by abnormal weather.
The secured budget will be primarily allocated to the following areas: ▲ crop pest and disease control support (550 million KRW), ▲ disaster prevention and response projects related to abnormal weather (350 million KRW), ▲ dissemination of new fruit cultivation technologies and farming techniques (150 million KRW), and ▲ strengthening on-site technical guidance and consulting services for farmers.
In particular, the city plans to enhance customized support for open-field fruit farms that are especially vulnerable to abnormal weather, and to establish a rapid on-site response system that can quickly adapt to changing weather conditions in order to prevent further damage to farms.
A city official stated, "The increasing frequency of abnormal weather is becoming a constant threat to the entire agricultural sector. By securing national, provincial, and city funds in advance, we will provide support and develop policies to help fruit farmers minimize damage and continue their farming operations sustainably."
