Assessment by Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Two-Level Improvement Over Last Year
Additional 2% in National Funding for Disaster Recovery
Seo-gu District of Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on January 6 that it received the highest rating, "Grade A," in the "2025 Natural Disaster Safety Assessment" organized by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
The Natural Disaster Safety Assessment is an annual evaluation conducted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety under the "Natural Disaster Countermeasures Act," targeting 228 cities, counties, and districts nationwide.
Seo-gu achieved excellent results in 33 indicators across three categories: disaster risk factors, disaster management, and facility management, and received a Grade A, which is two levels higher than last year.
Grade A is awarded only to the top 15% of institutions, and as a special benefit, they receive an additional 2% in national funding for disaster recovery costs.
Seo-gu has systematically revised and implemented response manuals and conducted training to prepare for natural disasters such as heavy rain, heavy snow, and earthquakes. The district also proactively carried out pre-season inspections of major facilities and disaster prevention projects.
In particular, strengthening a prevention-focused response system that blocks the possibility of disasters in advance and enhancing on-site response capabilities through interdepartmental collaboration were analyzed as key factors for the improved rating.
Kim Ikang, Mayor of Seo-gu, stated, "This result was achieved because all departments worked together to focus on improving disaster prevention facilities and disaster response systems in order to raise our natural disaster safety rating by two levels in a short period of time. We will continue to establish proactive preparedness systems to make Seo-gu the safest place to live, where residents can feel secure."
