The police have launched a compulsory investigation into the special prosecutor for insurrection in order to secure evidence related to former Correctional Headquarters Director Shin Yonghae's alleged involvement in key insurrection duties.
The Special Investigation Headquarters of the National Office of Investigation at the National Police Agency dispatched investigators to the office of the special prosecutor for insurrection at the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office on this day to execute a search and seizure warrant.
Former Director Shin is suspected of having checked the detention capacity of prisons nationwide at the time martial law was declared, and of reporting a document to former Justice Minister Park Sungjae stating that "3,600 people could be accommodated."
The special investigation headquarters took over the case and records concerning former Director Shin after the special prosecutor for insurrection concluded its investigation on December 12 last year, and has since been conducting its own investigation.
