On the morning of January 3, the first weekend of the new year, temperatures across the country are expected to drop to around minus 10 degrees Celsius. Starting in the afternoon, temperatures will rise, and typical winter cold for this time of year is expected to continue.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, morning temperatures in most regions nationwide on this day will be around minus 10 degrees Celsius. In the northeastern inland areas of Gyeonggi Province, the inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon Province, and the northeastern inland and mountainous areas of North Gyeongsang Province, temperatures may fall to as low as minus 15 degrees Celsius. Winds will be strong across most regions, reaching around 55 kilometers per hour until the morning, making the perceived temperature even lower.
From the afternoon, temperatures will rise and remain similar to the seasonal average (lows of minus 12 to 10 degrees Celsius, highs of 1 to 9 degrees Celsius) for the time being. The highest temperatures during the day are expected to range from 0 to 8 degrees Celsius.
On Sunday, January 4, the morning low is forecasted to be between minus 10 and 2 degrees Celsius, and the daytime high is expected to be between 1 and 10 degrees Celsius. There may also be places experiencing rain or snow during the first weekend of the new year.
On the west coast of South Chungcheong Province, less than 1 centimeter of snow or around 1 millimeter of precipitation is expected until the afternoon. In the mountainous areas of Jeju Island, light snow is expected until the morning; on the southern west coast of Gyeonggi Province, until the night; and in the Chungcheong region and North Jeolla Province, places may see less than 0.1 centimeters of snow until the morning of January 4.
The atmosphere is expected to be very dry in Seoul, parts of inland Gyeonggi Province, the east coast and mountainous areas of Gangwon Province, eastern South Jeolla Province, and the Gyeongsang region, so extra caution is advised to prevent wildfires and other fires.
Fine dust levels are expected to be at a 'moderate' level in most areas on this day. On January 4, levels are forecasted to reach 'bad' in Seoul, southern Gyeonggi Province, North Chungcheong Province, Sejong, and North Jeolla Province.
