U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that the United States will intervene if Iran responds with a harsh crackdown on the growing anti-government protests in the country.
At around 3 a.m. on January 2, President Trump posted on the social media platform Truth Social, warning, "If Iran, as it has always done, fires upon peaceful protesters and kills them violently, the United States will step in to rescue them." He added, "We are fully prepared and ready to deploy."
Currently, protests in Iran are intensifying as people demonstrate against the country's economic crisis, including the sharp decline in currency value and soaring inflation.
As protests have spread nationwide, at least seven people, including both protesters and members of militias, have reportedly died, while the Iranian government appears to be escalating its crackdown.
