Man in His 50s Stranded on Cheongsando Rocky Shore
Dramatic Rescue by Wando Coast Guard
A man in his 50s who was stranded on the rocky shore off the coast of Wando, South Jeolla Province, was rescued by the Coast Guard.
According to the Wando Coast Guard Station on January 2, a report was received at around 10:21 a.m. that day that a man in his 50s, identified as Mr. A, was stranded on the rocks near Janggi Beach in Cheongsando, Wando County. Upon receiving the report, the Wando Coast Guard immediately dispatched all available resources to the scene, including the Wando Police Substation, the Wando Rescue Team, and patrol vessels.

Taking into account the water depth and weather conditions at the site, the Coast Guard deployed a patrol boat, rescuing Mr. A just 23 minutes after the report was received. At the time of the rescue, Mr. A was suffering from hypothermia, but his life was not in danger.
According to the investigation, Mr. A boarded his own non-motorized rubber boat at around 9:20 a.m. that day to retrieve fishing gear that had drifted away. However, due to the current and other factors, he was unable to control the boat and disembarked onto a nearby rock, where he became stranded.
A representative from the Wando Coast Guard stated, "Swift action allowed us to save a precious life," and urged, "When fishing on rocky shores, please thoroughly check for tidal changes and weather conditions in advance, and exercise special caution to prevent stranding accidents."
