Wonju City to Establish "AI Convergence Team" Dedicated to AI Policies and Industries

Responsible for National AI Projects, Preliminary Feasibility Planning, and Demonstration Initiatives

Wonju City in Gangwon Province will establish an "AI Convergence Team" within the Advanced Industries Division starting January 1, 2026, launching an organization dedicated to overseeing AI-related policies and industries.

The AI Convergence Team has been created to administratively coordinate and support AI-related policies and projects that have previously been discussed and planned through the AI Committee and task force. Its main responsibilities include responding to national AI transformation projects, establishing education and demonstration infrastructure, and planning mid- to long-term initiatives.

Wonju City possesses a variety of foundations for AI convergence within the region, including a medical data base, the medical device industry, a regulatory free zone, and university and hospital infrastructure. The AI Convergence Team plans to use these assets to gradually support the application of AI in the industrial, public, and urban sectors.

In addition, the team will provide necessary administrative support during the review of AI-related policies and the implementation of projects, and will operate a collaborative system with relevant organizations to ensure that related policies and projects are managed systematically.

Won Kangsoo, Mayor of Wonju, stated, "The AI Convergence Team is an organization that administratively manages and supports AI-related policies and projects," adding, "We will continue to conduct administrative reviews and collaboration across the entire AI sector in accordance with relevant laws and procedures."
