Icy Roads Feared After Overnight Snowfall in Gwangju and Jeonnam A heavy snow warning was issued for Gwangju and Jeonnam, where snow accumulated overnight, with 10.9 cm recorded at Jangseong Sangmu Base and continued snowfall. Overnight snowfall in Gwangju and Jeonnam, where a heavy snow warning was issued, resulted in more than 10 cm of snow accumulation in some areas. Concerns over icy conditions are rising in both urban and rural regions, requiring heightened attention to traffic safety.


According to the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration, as of 5 a.m. on January 2, the highest recorded snowfall was at Jangseong Sangmu Base with 10.9 cm. This was followed by Mokpo with 9.7 cm, Sinan Aphaedo with 9.1 cm, Hampyeong Wolya with 8.7 cm, Yeonggwang with 8 cm, Muan Jeonnam Provincial Office with 7.9 cm, Haenam Sani with 7.4 cm, and Gwangju with 3.6 cm.


The maximum snow depth accumulated in a single day was also measured: Jangseong Sangmu Base at 11.2 cm, Mokpo at 9.7 cm, Sinan at 9.5 cm, Hampyeong Wolya at 9 cm, and Muan Jeonnam Provincial Office at 8.1 cm.


Since the previous day, a heavy snow advisory has been in effect for twelve cities and counties in Jeonnam, including Naju, Jangseong, Gangjin, Haenam, Wando, Yeongam, Muan, Hampyeong, Yeonggwang, Mokpo, Jindo, and Sinan. While snowfall amounts will vary by region, it is forecast to gradually stop on January 2 or continue until the morning of January 3.


Expected snowfall is 1 to 5 cm in Gwangju, around 1 cm in eastern Jeonnam, and 1 to 5 cm in western Jeonnam until January 3. Temperatures have also dropped significantly. As of 5 a.m. on January 2, temperatures were minus 8.1 degrees Celsius at Chosun University in Gwangju, minus 7.2 degrees in Hwasun Baegya-myeon, minus 6.8 degrees in Suncheon, minus 6.7 degrees in Jangseong, minus 6.6 degrees in Gokseong, and minus 6.4 degrees in Yeongam Sijong, with most areas experiencing sub-zero temperatures.


An official from the Meteorological Administration stated, "The snow that fell since yesterday may melt and refreeze, creating icy roads in many areas. Please pay close attention to traffic safety when walking or driving."
