Diplomatic History on the Road: Yangsan Revives the Joseon Tongsinsa Historic Street

Urban Landscape Renewal
Enhancing Local Identity and City Aesthetics Together

Four hundred years ago, the Joseon Tongsinsa, Korea’s “cultural envoy delegation” that crossed the Korea Strait and made a profound impact on the Japanese archipelago, would pause to catch their breath along an old road in Yangsan. Now, that historic path has been revived with a modern touch.

The city of Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do, has successfully completed a mural renovation project on the retaining wall of the Seochang Substation in the Samho-dong area, themed around the “Joseon Tongsinsa Road.”

This project aimed to restore the existing mural, which had suffered significant fading and damage over a long period, and to newly redesign it with motifs reflecting the historical and cultural significance of the Joseon Tongsinsa Road, a local heritage asset. The initiative sought to improve the city’s aesthetics while strengthening local identity.

The renovated mural expresses the journey and historical symbolism of the Joseon Tongsinsa in a contemporary style, making it easily understandable and relatable for both local residents and visitors.

In particular, the project focused on creating a pleasant street environment by applying bright, reassuring colors and more durable materials, taking into account the characteristics of the substation retaining wall located along a major pedestrian route in Samho-dong.

A city official stated, “Through this mural renovation project, we have transformed a historical asset of our region into a space that can be naturally experienced in daily life. We will continue to improve outdated urban landscapes and promote public design projects that tell our unique local stories.”

Yangsan City expects that, as a result of this project, the area around the Seochang-dong Joseon Tongsinsa Road will naturally connect with the Woongsang region’s cultural and tourism corridor centered on the Hoiya River, establishing itself as a leading cultural and historical street frequented by both residents and tourists.
