President Lee Jae-myung paid his respects at the National Seoul Memorial Cemetery as his first official schedule of the new year on January 1.
Kim Namjun, spokesperson for the presidential office, announced this in a written briefing on the same day.
The memorial ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Kim Minseok, cabinet members and ministers, Kang Hoonshik, Chief Presidential Secretary, as well as staff from the presidential office.
After laying flowers and offering incense at the Memorial Tower, President Lee observed a moment of silence to honor the spirits of the fallen patriots and heroes who defended the nation.
Kim, the spokesperson, also conveyed that President Lee expressed his resolve for the new year of Byeong-o by signing the guestbook with the message, '"A world where we live together" - Together with the people of Korea, I will open the first year of Korea’s great leap forward.'
After the memorial, President Lee shared words of encouragement over a breakfast of rice cake soup with those who attended the ceremony at the presidential staff cafeteria.
