"Compute Capacity Expands to 2GW"
xAI, the artificial intelligence (AI) startup led by Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has purchased a new data center building in Mississippi, United States.
On December 30 (local time), CEO Musk announced on the social networking service X (formerly Twitter) that "xAI has acquired its third (data center) building, known as 'Macrohardrr,'" adding, "The training compute capacity will reach nearly 2 gigawatts (GW)."
The building is an approximately 810,000-square-foot (about 75,000-square-meter) warehouse, which will be converted into a data center. As a result, CEO Musk is moving closer to his previously stated goal of operating one million graphics processing units (GPUs) in the data center.
According to The Information, a U.S. information technology (IT) media outlet, the newly acquired building by xAI is located adjacent to the existing 'Colossus2' data center in Memphis, Tennessee. The two buildings are separated by the state border, with Colossus2 situated in Memphis, Tennessee, and the new building located in Southaven, Mississippi. Residents of Memphis claim that the gas turbines installed by xAI to supply power have worsened air pollution, and local politicians are supporting these claims, leading to growing anti-xAI sentiment in the area. In contrast, Mississippi is reportedly still welcoming xAI as of now.
The name 'Macrohardrr' given to the new data center appears to signify that 'Colossus2,' nicknamed 'Macrohard,' has become more powerful through expansion. 'Macrohard,' meaning 'large and hard,' is a play on words that reverses 'Microsoft' (which can be interpreted as 'small and soft'). This is seen as reflecting CEO Musk's ambition to build a software company that can compete with Microsoft.
