NC AI Releases Industry-Specialized AI Model 'VAETKI' as Open Source, Embarks on Global Expansion

Open Source Release on Hugging Face, Available to All
Industry-Focused and Efficient Model
High Performance with Reduced Operational Costs
Aiming for Advanced Technology and Global Expansion

On December 31, NC AI announced that it will release its proprietary AI foundation model, VAETKI (Vertical AI Engine for Transformation of Key Industries), as open source on Hugging Face, a global open-source platform, to accelerate industrial artificial intelligence (AI) transformation (AX).

At the first presentation of the independent AI foundation model project held the previous day, NC AI announced the completion of the first phase of VAETKI’s development and unveiled its industry-specific proof-of-concept results. To develop industry-specialized AI models, NC AI formed a consortium comprising 14 organizations from industry, academia, and research, including Lotte Innovate and POSCO DX, as well as 40 end-user companies.

The core strengths of the VAETKI model are its industry suitability and cost efficiency. While global companies are scaling up their models, NC AI focused on ensuring efficiency so that businesses can realistically adopt the technology. VAETKI is a large-scale model with 100 billion parameters, but by applying a Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture, only 11 billion parameters are activated during inference. This approach maintains high performance while reducing operational costs.

The NC AI consortium is already achieving tangible results by conducting over 28 expansion projects utilizing VAETKI across various industrial sites. The consortium aims to drive industrial innovation through physical AI technologies that control the physical world, such as robots and factories.

In the smart industry sector, consortium member InterX is working on optimizing production lines for automotive parts companies. In the defense and security sector, the consortium is collaborating with the Army Headquarters under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop defense-specialized AI that operates in secure environments. In the distribution and logistics industry, the consortium is working together with Lotte Innovate.

Building on the achievements of the first phase, the NC AI consortium plans to advance its technology and expand globally by 2027. Next year, the consortium aims to develop a 200-billion-parameter model with world-class performance, as well as a large multimodal model (LMM) capable of integrated understanding of text, images, video, 3D, and sound. By 2027, the goal is to export ‘K-Sovereign AI’ as a packaged solution to markets in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and beyond.

Lee Yeonsu, CEO of NC AI, stated, “NC AI’s goal is not simply to create high-performance models, but to help Korea’s manufacturing, defense, and content industries soar to the global top with the wings of AI. We will do our utmost to ensure that the AI technology NC AI has accumulated in gaming becomes the core engine powering real-world factories, safeguarding national security, and spreading K-culture worldwide.”
