Tatiana Schlossberg was the second of three children of Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, the eldest daughter of former President John F. Kennedy. In an essay published online in The New Yorker on the 22nd of last month, she wrote, "On the day I gave birth to my second child last year, doctors discovered abnormally high white blood cell counts, and after further tests, I was diagnosed with leukemia."
In the essay, she confessed, "I have tried to live kindly all my life, but I have added another tragedy to my mother's and our family's lives," and "the most painful thing is knowing there is no way to prevent it." Coincidentally, the essay was released on November 22, the 62nd anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's assassination in 1963. The Kennedy family has long been a prominent force in American political and social life, but repeated tragedies have led to the phrase "Kennedy Curse" to describe the series of misfortunes the family has endured.
After the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, his brother Robert F. Kennedy, who was then Attorney General, was also shot and killed during his presidential campaign in 1968. Another brother, Ted Kennedy, suffered a major blow to his political career in the Chappaquiddick incident in 1969, and several family members have died young due to plane crashes, car accidents, and substance abuse issues. The tragedies have continued into recent generations: in 2020, Maeve Kennedy McKean, granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy, died in a canoe accident, and now, with the death of Tatiana Schlossberg, another sorrowful chapter has been added to the Kennedy family's history.
Born in Manhattan, New York, in 1990, Schlossberg majored in history at Yale University and earned a master's degree in history from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. She worked as a journalist for outlets such as The New York Times and contributed to publications like The Washington Post, specializing in environmental issues. She is survived by her parents, siblings, husband, and two young children. Tributes continue to pour in from American society and the media, with many remembering "her intellect and courage will be long remembered."
