This monument was established to commemorate the historic site where local residents shouted for independence during the March 1st Movement in 1919, and to carry on the region's identity and spirit of independence. The present-day Pyeongnae-dong area of Namyangju City was part of Yangju County at the time, and the first independence movement in the area took place here. However, there had been no symbolic facility to honor this event, prompting continued requests from local groups such as the Pyeongnae-dong Residents' Association.
The monument was constructed with a total project cost of 26 million won, measuring 1.7 meters wide, 0.8 meters deep, and 2.2 meters high. The symbol of the traditional Taegeukgi has been reinterpreted in a modern sculptural language, with the yin and yang elements rising together, symbolizing the noble meaning of the Pyeongnae-dong independence movement and the continuation of the spirit of independence. In addition, a QR code has been installed on the monument, linking to the video "80 Years of Light, Now We Call the Name," which covers the history of the independence movement in Namyangju City.

About 40 people attended the unveiling ceremony, including Mayor Joo Kwangdeok, City Council Chairman Cho Seongdae, local provincial and city council members, the Namyangju Chapter President of the Liberation Association, and the Pyeongnae-dong Residents' Association President. The event proceeded in the following order: patriotic ceremony, progress report, commemorative address, unveiling and wreath-laying, and commemorative photo session.
Mayor Joo Kwangdeok stated, "Pyeongnae-dong is a meaningful site where the first independence movement in Namyangju took place," and added, "I hope this monument serves as a bridge connecting the will of our ancestors, who did not yield even in dark times, to the present and future."
