People Power Party's Choo Kyung-ho Announces Candidacy for Daegu Mayor: "I Will Revive Daegu's Failing Economy"

"I will seek the truth in court regarding legal issues"

Choo Kyung-ho, a member of the People Power Party representing Dalseong District in Daegu, announced his candidacy for Daegu mayor on December 29.

On this day, Choo stated on Facebook, "I intend to run in the Daegu mayoral election scheduled for June next year. I have listened carefully to the advice and opinions of many citizens and have given this decision much thought."

Choo said, "Right now, our city of Daegu is mired in deep stagnation, having left behind the glory of being one of Korea's three major cities. The sighs of citizens grow deeper by the day, and young people take it for granted to leave their hometown in search of jobs. This cannot continue. We must truly revive Daegu's economy. What Daegu needs now is economic leadership-someone who understands the economy and can address economic issues. We need an economic expert who can awaken Daegu's potential and deliver results through execution."

He continued, "For 35 years, I have served as an economic bureaucrat, taking responsibility for Korea's economic policies and budgets, and as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, I steered the nation's economy. As a three-term National Assembly member and floor leader, I have built the political capabilities and networks needed to turn policies into reality. With all the experience and achievements I have accumulated throughout my life in the fields of economics, administration, and politics, I sincerely wish to devote myself entirely to my hometown of Daegu."

Choo also stated, "I will resolutely confront and overcome low-level political oppression and retaliation. I will confidently seek judicial truth in the courts. Through my challenge in this Daegu mayoral election, I seek not the judgment of biased and distorted political oppression by the Lee Jaemyung administration and political special prosecutors, but the stern evaluation and judgment of Daegu citizens who love Daegu and Korea. From now on, I will devote myself solely to the heavy responsibility of advancing Daegu's economy."

He pledged, "Starting from the first day of the New Year, I will visit citizens' workplaces in person to identify problems and listen to their wisdom, gathering hopes for a new leap forward. Based on this, I will awaken a stagnant Daegu and present a concrete vision to make Daegu's economic heart beat strongly once again. I will surely restore Daegu's pride. I will help Daegu citizens regain their self-esteem. Together with the citizens, I will usher in a new era of glory for 'Great Daegu Once Again.'"

Choo is a politician who began his career as a civil servant after passing the higher civil service exam, working at the former Economic Planning Board since 1987. He is a three-term lawmaker with the People Power Party, having served as the First Vice Minister of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Chief of the Office for Government Policy Coordination, and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance. He is currently under investigation on charges of insurrection.
