Coupang Announces 1.68 Trillion Won Customer Compensation Plan... 50,000 Won Per Person

Sequential Distribution Begins January 15 Next Year
50,000 Won Per Person... Total Compensation Reaches 1.685 Trillion Won

On December 29, Coupang announced a customer compensation plan worth a total of 1.685 trillion won in response to the recent personal information leak incident.

Starting January 15, Coupang plans to distribute purchase vouchers to customers. The recipients are the 33.7 million accounts that received a notification of the personal information leak last month, with each customer receiving a voucher worth 50,000 won. Both Wow members and general members will receive the same amount. Former Coupang customers who received the notification after closing their accounts are also included. Coupang will sequentially inform all 33.7 million eligible customers via text message about how to use the purchase vouchers.

Harold Rogers, Interim Representative Director of Coupang Korea, stated, “All Coupang employees deeply regret the great concern and distress the recent personal information leak has caused our customers,” adding, “We have prepared this compensation plan as a responsible measure for our customers.”

Coupang will provide each eligible customer with four types of single-use purchase vouchers totaling 50,000 won: 5,000 won each for all items from Rocket Delivery, Rocket Direct Purchase, Seller Rocket, and Marketplace Coupang; 5,000 won for Coupang Eats; 20,000 won for Coupang Travel products; and 20,000 won for Alux products.

Eligible customers will be able to check their vouchers sequentially on the Coupang application (app) starting January 15. The vouchers can be applied when making a purchase. Further details will be announced separately.

Interim Representative Director Rogers said, “Taking this incident as a turning point, Coupang will sincerely practice ‘customer-centricity’ and fulfill our responsibilities to the end, striving to become a company trusted by our customers,” and added, “We once again deeply apologize to all our customers.”
