"Hakeem Jeffries Will Become Speaker of the House"
Nancy Pelosi, former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives who has announced her retirement from politics after her current term in the House, predicted that the Democratic Party will secure the majority in the House in the November 2026 midterm elections.
Pelosi, who is currently serving as a Democratic member of the House, said in an interview with ABC on the 28th (local time) that the Democratic Party will regain the House majority in the midterm elections, and that Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries will become Speaker of the House. Pelosi remarked, "The Republican Party has paralyzed Congress. They only act according to what President Donald Trump demands." She appeared to be criticizing President Trump for actions such as withholding the execution of budgets approved by Congress or advancing major policies through executive orders rather than legislation.
Regarding the possibility of pursuing impeachment against President Trump, Pelosi stated, "I have always told people that I am responsible for impeachment," adding, "Impeachment is not something that someone simply decides to do; it depends on how he violates the Constitution." During her tenure as Speaker, Pelosi led the passage of two articles of impeachment against President Trump during his first term, on charges including incitement of insurrection, in 2019 and 2021.
Pelosi also reflected on her leadership in passing the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) as Speaker, saying, "If I am remembered for one achievement, it will be Obamacare." She added that Obamacare "was not just a way to meet healthcare needs, but also a means to address families' financial needs," and emphasized, "We will continue this fight." Her remarks were interpreted as a response to President Trump and the Republican Party's opposition to extending subsidies for Obamacare and their efforts to introduce a new healthcare reform bill.
As the first and, so far, only woman to serve as Speaker of the House in U.S. history, Pelosi effectively announced her retirement from politics last month by declaring that she would not run in the 2026 House elections.
