Until now, Inje County had been unable to apply to host the provincial sports festival due to the lack of sports facilities that meet the Korea Association of Athletics Federations' official standards. However, with the completion of the Inje Sports Complex scheduled for 2026, the county applied to host the festival and was finally selected on December 19 after an on-site inspection by the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Sports Council.

With this confirmation as the host city, the "Inje Sports Complex Development Project" has also gained significant momentum.

The Inje Sports Complex Development Project, which is progressing smoothly with a current completion rate of 52.9%, is being carried out with a total project cost of 51 billion won, including national and provincial funding. The complex is being built on a total site area of 108,712 square meters, with a stadium area of 25,990 square meters. The facility will feature 5,000 seats, an eight-lane athletics track, a natural grass field, and an auxiliary track.

The Inje Sports Complex will be equipped with an athletics track that meets the Korea Association of Athletics Federations' Class 2 certified stadium standards. It is expected to not only host the 2028 Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Sports Festival, which has now been confirmed, but also national-level sporting events in the future.

The county plans to complete the sports complex development project by November 2026. Afterward, Inje County will focus on expanding and improving sports facilities and will gradually prepare for all aspects of operating the festival to ensure the successful hosting of the provincial sports event.

Kim Chunmi, Head of the Sports and Youth Department, said, "Hosting the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Sports Festival has been a long-cherished wish of Inje residents," adding, "We will do our utmost to thoroughly prepare and manage the facilities so that the event revitalizes the entire county and becomes a festival that unites all Gangwon residents."
