Defense Minister An Kyu-baek Visits Submarine Command, Vows to Accelerate Nuclear Submarine Project

Defense Minister An Kyu-baek stated on the 26th that he would accelerate the national project for nuclear-powered submarines during his visit to the Submarine Command, where the Navy's Jang Bogo-class submarine is stationed.

According to the Ministry of National Defense, Minister An visited the Jang Bogo-class submarine, the first submarine of the Republic of Korea and soon to be decommissioned, and remarked, "The spirit of the Jang Bogo-class submarine, which marked the great first step in the history of Korea's submarines and was the starting point for a new era for the Navy, will live on forever in the emerging nuclear-powered submarines." He added, "Next year, we will form a permanent pan-government task force and complete negotiations with the United States within two years."


Earlier, Minister An visited the Navy's elite Special Warfare Group (UDT/SEAL), the Salvage and Rescue Unit (SSU), the 1st Marine Division, and the Training Command to inspect operational readiness and encourage service members. He praised the Navy Special Warfare Group as "the world's best combat unit," and commended its history and tradition of selfless dedication to the nation and its people in various real combat situations, such as the Cheonan ship transfer operation and the Dawn of the Gulf of Aden operation. He emphasized, "The experience accumulated through real combat is a valuable asset that cannot be acquired through theory alone," and urged, "Please make every effort to ensure that this experience is fully inherited and further developed."


Additionally, during his visit to the Pohang 1st Marine Division and the Training Command, Minister An personally awarded the Marine Corps' red name tags to the 1,324th class of new Marines who had completed their intensive training week.
