This donation initiative utilized expiring airline miles accumulated through official business trips, serving as a meaningful example of social contribution by converting unused public assets into welfare support. The voluntary participation of provincial government employees not only reduced the waste of miles but also demonstrated their commitment to caring for the local community.
In principle, airline miles earned through official business trips cannot be used for personal purposes and are restricted to purchasing airline tickets for work-related travel. However, since the number of overseas business trips is limited and it is often difficult to secure seats with miles, a significant portion of these miles has continued to expire without being used.
To address the issue of public airline miles expiring unused, the province planned and implemented social contribution activities utilizing these miles. Through these efforts, Gangwon Province aims to establish an efficient model for the use of public airline miles.
Going forward, the province plans to continue hosting public airline mileage donation events annually and to explore a wider range of utilization methods.
Yeo Junghyup, Vice Governor for Administrative Affairs of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, stated, "It is very meaningful to be able to use miles that would otherwise expire in such a worthwhile way," adding, "We will continue to strive to reduce waste of budget and public resources, while enhancing administrative efficiency and social value."
