Analysis Shows Fee Adjustment Needed for Sustainable Operation
New 20% Cremation Fee Reduction for Northern Inland Residents
Non-Resident Fee Raised from 700,000 Won to 1 Million Won
Chuncheon City in Gangwon Province will adjust the cremation fee at Chuncheon Ansik Park from 70,000 won to 100,000 won for residents and strengthen the support system for residents of the northern inland region and socially disadvantaged groups.
The city recently revised the "Ordinance on the Establishment, Development, and Management of Chuncheon Ansik Park" to improve convenience for citizens using funeral facilities and to ensure the stable operation of public funeral facilities. The amended ordinance will take effect from January 1 of next year.
According to research by the Gangwon Research Institute, the usage fees for funeral facilities in Chuncheon are about 40% lower than the national average. In particular, the standard cremation fee of 70,000 won for residents is the lowest in the province. An analysis of operating costs confirmed that an adjustment of the fee is necessary for sustainable operation.
Accordingly, the cremation fee will be adjusted from 70,000 won to 100,000 won for residents, and from 700,000 won to 1 million won for non-residents. This adjustment reflects the operating and maintenance costs of funeral facilities and is intended to bring the previously low usage fees in line with actual expenses.
Additionally, to improve convenience for residents of the northern inland region, Chuncheon City will, in accordance with a business agreement, prioritize the allocation of one cremation furnace from February 3, 2025, and the revised ordinance also provides a basis for a 20% reduction in cremation costs for these residents.
For socially disadvantaged groups such as basic livelihood security recipients and national merit awardees, the city has removed the proviso clause, allowing them to more reliably receive exemptions from reburial remains fees. With the scheduled completion of the second columbarium, the city has also improved its guidance system to help citizens better understand the facilities.
A Chuncheon City official stated, "This revision is a minimum measure to ensure the stable operation of public funeral facilities, maintain service quality, and establish a foundation for funeral administration," adding, "We will continue to make improvements so that public funeral facilities can faithfully fulfill their role."
