First Domestic Application of AI to Military Command and Control System
Equipped with Advanced ICT Technologies Including Cloud Infrastructure
Hanwha Systems will take charge of the reconstruction project for the core command and control system overseeing South Korea-U.S. combined operations. As the transition of wartime operational control approaches, this is expected to become the first artificial intelligence (AI)-powered command system supporting Korea-led combined tactics.
Hanwha Systems announced on the 26th that it has been awarded the 93.7 billion won "Development Project for Upgrading the Allied Command and Joint Control System," overseen by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration. A command and control system refers to the facilities and equipment necessary for military commanders to direct and control their units according to their missions.
The Allied Command and Joint Control System is a core system responsible for command and control of South Korea-U.S. combined operations across the Korean Peninsula, and was first deployed in 2015. However, ongoing issues regarding system operation and security, as well as the need for technological advancement due to the transfer of wartime operational control and changes in the combined command structure, have led to the decision to completely redevelop the system rather than simply improve its performance.
The upgraded Allied Command and Joint Control System will incorporate a wide range of advanced ICT technologies, including AI-based situational analysis and automated decision-making support, cloud-based server infrastructure, and desktop virtualization.
In particular, this project marks the first domestic case of applying AI to a command and control system. By enabling AI to rapidly collect and process the vast amounts of data generated on the battlefield, it is expected to significantly reduce the time required for operators to perform their work. In addition, AI-powered intelligent services will be provided throughout the entire command decision-making process, from information analysis to planning, thereby supporting commanders in making more accurate decisions.
Since communication and data integration are critical for national defense command and control systems, enhanced security is considered the most important factor. Equipped with defense cyber security and ICT convergence technologies, Hanwha Systems has successfully carried out defense-specialized AI projects such as the "AI-based Intelligent Command Decision Support System." Leveraging the expertise and technological capabilities gained through these projects, the company plans to develop an advanced command and control system with strengthened information protection capabilities.
A Hanwha Systems representative stated, "Winning this project is significant as it once again proves Hanwha Systems' top-tier capabilities in defense-ICT convergence in Korea," adding, "Going forward, Hanwha Systems will continue to play a key role in leading the future battlefield based on defense AI technologies."
