The H5 strain of avian influenza (AI) antigen has been detected at a breeder duck farm in Naju, Jeonnam Province.

According to Jeonnam Province on December 24, the farm owner operating a breeder duck farm in Donggang-myeon, Naju, reported on December 23 that “the egg-laying rate of the ducks has dropped.”

In response, the Jeonnam Provincial Animal Hygiene Laboratory immediately conducted a thorough inspection. As a result, the H5 strain of avian influenza was confirmed. The Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency is currently verifying whether it is highly pathogenic.

The farm in question was found to be raising approximately 6,000 meat ducks at 69 weeks of age.

Jeonnam Province deployed an initial quarantine team to implement disease control measures, including restricting access to the farm and conducting disinfection. Additionally, a provincial field support officer was dispatched to analyze the cause of the outbreak.

To prevent further spread, Jeonnam Province has proactively decided to cull all 6,000 ducks at the affected farm and designated the area within a 10-kilometer radius of the outbreak as a quarantine zone.

Furthermore, a temporary movement ban has been imposed on duck farms and related facilities in the Jeonnam region.

An official from Jeonnam Province stated, “We urge all poultry farms to strictly adhere to quarantine guidelines, including thorough disinfection and restricting access to outsiders.”

As of this date, there have been 18 cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza nationwide, with two of them occurring in Jeonnam Province.
