Starlight Instead of the Night Sea... Ulleung County Holds Winter Light Tree Lighting Ceremony

Lights descended over the sound of waves.

Ulleung County in North Gyeongsang Province successfully hosted the "Winter Light Tree Lighting Ceremony 2025" at the outdoor plaza of Hanmaeum Hall on December 22, heightening anticipation for the upcoming Christmas and year-end season.

This lighting ceremony was organized so that residents and tourists could share the warmth of winter ahead of Christmas, meaningfully wrap up the year, and welcome the New Year together.

The event became a venue for unity across generations and social groups, with participation from senior citizens, women, youth, teenagers, children, leaders from various social organizations and religious groups, and local residents.

On this day, as the Winter Light Tree was illuminated at the Hanmaeum Hall outdoor plaza, the melodies of carols performed on an electric violin resonated through the air, adding to the excitement of waiting for Christmas and the warm atmosphere of the year-end. The emotional performances and lighting created a touching and lingering impression for residents who attended the event.

In particular, a photo zone decorated with a Christmas theme was set up around the tree, allowing residents and tourists to take commemorative photos and create cherished memories. The photo zone was especially popular among families and teenagers, adding to the enjoyment of the event.

The illuminated Winter Light Tree will remain lit until the end of February 2026, serving as a symbolic winter landmark that brightens Ulleungdo’s nights not only during Christmas but throughout the winter. It is expected to help foster a festive atmosphere in the region and play a positive role in revitalizing winter tourism.

County Governor Nam Han-gwon said, "We organized this lighting ceremony to deliver a small sense of excitement and warm comfort to our residents ahead of Christmas," adding, "I hope these lights will become a beacon of hope, brightening the hearts of everyone who visits Ulleung and our residents throughout the winter."
