As the Christmas holiday approaches, Gwangju and South Jeolla Province are expected to experience a series of rain and snow showers followed by a cold snap. With temperatures forecast to drop significantly around Christmas, caution is advised regarding icy roads and the cold wave.
According to the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration on December 23, 5 to 20 millimeters of rain are expected in Gwangju and South Jeolla Province from the afternoon of this day until the morning of Christmas Eve on the 24th. While the rain is expected to gradually stop from midday on the 24th, falling temperatures overnight may cause black ice or icy roads in some areas.
On Christmas Day, December 25, cold air will move southward, bringing the onset of frigid weather. The morning low is forecast to range from minus 3 degrees Celsius to 3 degrees Celsius, and the daytime high is expected to be between 3 and 7 degrees Celsius. From the afternoon, snow is likely to fall, especially along the west coast of South Jeolla Province.
The snow is expected to begin after 3 p.m. on this day in areas near the west coast of South Jeolla Province, such as Muan, Hampyeong, Yeonggwang, Mokpo, and Yeongam, and continue until the morning of the 26th. The anticipated snowfall is around 1 centimeter, which is not significant, but in some areas, sleet may also occur.
On the 26th, the coldest weather of this winter is expected. Morning temperatures will range from minus 9 degrees Celsius to minus 3 degrees Celsius, and daytime temperatures will be between minus 1 degree Celsius and 3 degrees Celsius, which is 3 to 6 degrees lower than average. An additional 1 to 3 centimeters of snow is forecast for the west coast of South Jeolla Province.
During this period, high wave and strong wind advisories may also be issued for the seas. However, starting from the weekend, temperatures are expected to gradually rise and return to seasonal norms.
An official from the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration stated, "If the cold air in the upper atmosphere intensifies, the snow zone could expand inland and snowfall amounts could increase," and urged the public to "regularly check for updates on temperature changes and forecasts for snow and rain."
