All elementary, middle, and high schools in Seoul will implement AI ethics education and digital overdependence prevention education starting in March next year. From 2027, the current essay and written assessments conducted in schools are expected to be graded using artificial intelligence (AI). In line with the AI and digital transformation in education, each school will be assigned a lead teacher for these initiatives.

The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education announced the "Comprehensive AI Education Plan for Elementary, Middle, and High Schools" on December 23.

On this day, Superintendent Chung Geunsik held a press conference at the main office and stated, "To cultivate students who can responsibly lead the AI era, we have established the 'Comprehensive AI Education Plan,' which consists of 20 initiatives across five key areas: responsible AI education, AI-based classroom innovation, nurturing core talent, strengthening teacher expertise, and building support systems and environments, with a total of 60 detailed action items."

First, to ensure proper and safe use of AI, the beginning of the new school year in March will be designated as "AI and Digital Competency Education Week," during which all schools will provide education on topics such as AI ethics and digital citizenship. In addition to AI ethics education, digital overdependence prevention, and digital usage habit education, there will also be strengthened instruction on fact-checking, as well as digital and cyber violence prevention.

There are also plans to drive innovation in classes and assessments by utilizing AI technology, so that students can develop initiative and critical thinking skills.

The AI personalized teaching and learning platform (SEN School) will offer a variety of AI and edtech tools and content, and teachers will share educational materials they have created to improve the quality of instruction. Additionally, the "AI Essay and Written Assessment Support System (ChaeumAI)" developed by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education will be piloted in 110 schools next year, with plans to expand its use to all schools in Seoul by 2027. This means that the essay and written performance assessments currently conducted in schools will be graded using AI in the future.

An "AI Education Center" will also be established to nurture talent for the AI era. The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education will relocate its headquarters to Yongsan next year, and the first and second floors of the current main building will be used as the AI Education Center. The center will offer advanced programs in collaboration with universities such as Seoul National University, Yonsei University, University of Seoul, and Seoul National University of Science and Technology. The curricula of science high schools, gifted schools, and vocational high schools will be innovated to nurture core talent in the AI field, and teachers will also have opportunities for advanced training, such as deep learning practice using GPUs.

Teacher expertise will also be strengthened to support student growth. Each school will have at least one lead teacher for AI and edtech, and customized training will be expanded for all educators.

Superintendent Chung said, "This comprehensive AI education plan goes beyond simply teaching how to use AI; it focuses on helping each student think independently, collaborate, and responsibly coexist with AI," adding, "We will actively support all students in Seoul so that they can develop both humanity and future competencies without disparity and grow into leaders of the AI era."
