Nowon District and SeoulTech to Build 12,000m² Culture and Sports Center

Swimming Pool and Cultural Facilities to Be Built on Campus
Shared Use for Students and Local Residents

Nowon District in Seoul is partnering with Seoul National University of Science and Technology to build a public culture and sports facility on the university campus, designed for use by both local residents and university students.

Nowon District (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced on the 22nd that it will collaborate with Seoul National University of Science and Technology to construct the 'Regional Cooperation Culture and Sports Support Center.' The initiative aims to expand the living infrastructure in the Gongneung-dong area, where public culture and sports facilities are relatively lacking, and to create a mutually beneficial model for growth between the university and the local community.

The Regional Cooperation Culture and Sports Support Center will be built on an unused site within the Seoul National University of Science and Technology campus. The facility will have one basement floor and three above-ground floors, with a total floor area of approximately 12,000 square meters. Selected as part of the Ministry of Education’s National University Facility Expansion Project, the center will be developed in phases through 2031. It will house sports facilities such as a swimming pool and fitness center, as well as cultural and lifelong education facilities, serving as a multi-purpose space to meet the leisure, health, and learning needs of both students and local residents.

The district plans to ensure that the culture and sports facilities created through this university partnership become genuine public amenities that benefit local residents, rather than being limited to a specific group. To this end, a business agreement will be signed with Seoul National University of Science and Technology on the 24th to establish a close cooperative framework and to promote the project with a focus on public value that contributes to the local community.

The construction of the Regional Cooperation Culture and Sports Support Center in collaboration with Seoul National University of Science and Technology is significant as it will serve as a hub for daily sports, supplementing and expanding the existing network of regional sports centers. By sharing the university’s spaces and resources with the community, the project is expected to address the demand for public sports facilities in underserved areas and provide more diverse opportunities for cultural and sports activities.

Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon District, stated, "This agreement marks the starting point for mutually beneficial cooperation, as the university shares its spaces and resources with the local community. We will continue our policy efforts to ensure that residents can enjoy high-quality cultural and sports services close to where they live."
