Eco-Friendly Wooden Architecture and 360-Degree Panoramic Views
Enjoy the City Nightscape ... Official Opening in February 2026
The 'Bomunsan Big Tree Observatory' offers a 360-degree panoramic view through its outdoor observatory located on the rooftop. In particular, it is drawing attention as a new landmark of Daejeon, with expectations that it will become a popular spot for enjoying the dazzling city nightscape.
On December 19, Daejeon City held a completion ceremony for the 'Bomunsan Big Tree Observatory,' which was constructed as an eco-friendly wooden building.
The Bomunsan Big Tree Observatory stands 24 meters tall and consists of one basement level and two above-ground floors. A total budget of 13 billion won was invested, including 6.5 billion won in national funds secured through a Korea Forest Service contest.
The former Bowoondae was built in 1965 and later reconstructed as a two-story structure in 1995. However, as it became outdated, there were continuous calls for its redevelopment. In response, Daejeon City designated the site of the old Bowoondae as the location for the new observatory and accelerated efforts to establish a new urban landmark.
More than 100 citizens and officials attended the event to celebrate the completion of the observatory, raising expectations that Bomunsan will be reborn as Daejeon's leading destination for extended-stay tourism.
The event featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony with key guests, after which attendees ascended the observatory to take in a sweeping view of downtown Daejeon. The open vistas and beautiful scenery from the observatory drew admiration from many participants.
Especially noteworthy is the observatory's original design, which combines curves and straight lines to form a tree-shaped structure. It has been evaluated as the most technically challenging wooden building ever attempted in Korea.
Inside, in addition to the observation space, a variety of facilities such as a relaxation area, a book caf?, and a photo zone will also be provided.
Lee Jangwoo, Mayor of Daejeon, introduced the Bomunsan Big Tree Observatory as "not just a facility, but a symbolic space connecting Daejeon's beautiful nature and cityscape, and a new landmark that elevates the pride of our citizens."
The observatory is scheduled to officially open in February 2026 after preparations following the completion ceremony.
