According to local media outlet NDTV on the 18th (local time), a man named Farooq, who lived in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested by police on charges of killing his wife and two underage daughters and hiding their bodies in the yard of his home.
According to investigators, Farooq had persistently demanded that his wife, Tahira, wear a burqa, the traditional Islamic attire. He insisted that she cover most of her body when going out and, for 18 years, did not allow her to take photos showing her face or to obtain official identification. Testimonies also revealed that he controlled many aspects of her life, including restricting contact with her father even when he visited their home.
Tahira reportedly raised concerns about this situation continuously, and the couple had repeated conflicts over issues related to clothing and going out. Police believe that Farooq considered it a blow to his honor when his wife visited her family without wearing a burqa.
The incident occurred around midnight on the 10th. After an argument with his wife inside the house, Farooq committed the crime, and when his two daughters came out after hearing the commotion, he killed them as well. He then moved the three bodies to a pit in the yard that had been dug in advance for bathroom construction, covered them, and concealed the site to make it difficult for others to notice.
After several days passed without seeing his daughter-in-law and grandchildren, Farooq's father inquired about their whereabouts. Farooq avoided giving a clear answer and claimed they were staying elsewhere. Suspicious, his father reported the matter to the police, which brought the case to light.
During the investigation, Farooq confessed to the crime, and based on his statement, police searched the yard and found the bodies. A handgun and ammunition believed to have been used in the crime were also recovered at the scene.
The police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact motive and circumstances of the crime, while also closely examining the background in which domestic violence and coercive control led to this tragedy.
