12 Nominee Books to Be Selected
Jeonju City in North Jeolla Province is accepting recommendations for nominee books for the "2026 Jeonju Book of the Year," which will be read together with citizens over the course of a year, until January 9 next year.
According to the city on the 19th, the "Jeonju Book of the Year" is a representative citizen reading campaign that selects a book to represent Jeonju every year and operates various related programs to promote a reading culture based on empathy through books.
All processes, from recommending nominee books to final selection, involve citizen participation, and books for each category are determined accordingly.
The recommendation categories are: ▲Children (Picture Books), ▲Children (Text), ▲Youth, and ▲General, for a total of four categories. Books must meet the following criteria: ▲Books by living Korean authors whose first edition was published in 2025, ▲Books that address themes capable of promoting regional or social integration, and ▲Books that can be read by anyone regardless of religious or political orientation. Recommendations can be freely submitted based on these criteria.
However, each person may recommend up to five books, and books that are political, religious, or commercial in nature, out-of-print books, series, and books by foreign authors are excluded from consideration.
To recommend a book, submit the recommended title and your reason for recommendation via the Jeonju Reading Festival website within the submission period.
The city will review the recommended books through an internal selection committee meeting and then select 12 nominee books through a meeting of the Jeonju Reading Festival working group selection committee.
Based on this, a two-week citizen vote will be held, and one book from each of the four categories (Children (Picture Books), Children (Text), Youth, and General) will be finally selected as the "2026 Jeonju Book of the Year."
The selected books will be used in various related programs starting in April next year, including a 100-day transcription challenge, author meet-and-greet sessions, a citizen contest, and a family reading quiz event.
Park Nammi, Director of the City Library and Lifelong Learning Division, stated, "The Jeonju Book of the Year is not decided by someone else, but begins in the hearts of citizens. I hope that even a small act of recommending a single book will become a valuable opportunity to transform Jeonju's reading culture."
