New 500,000 Won Birth Celebration Payment for First Child
Support for Second and Third Child Doubled
Siheung City in Gyeonggi Province will significantly expand both the scope and amount of its support payments for families with newborns starting next year. In particular, families who have a fourth child will receive an exceptional support payment of 8.4 million won.
On December 18, Siheung City announced that it would fully revise the "Ordinance on Support for Pregnancy and Childbirth in Siheung City," expanding both the eligibility and amount of support for families with newborns starting next year.
Previously, since last year, the city has been providing postpartum care expenses in the form of local currency to all families with newborns. In addition, from the second and third child onward, the city has gradually increased support by providing additional birth celebration payments.
From next year, families with a first child, who previously only received 400,000 won for postpartum care expenses, will receive an additional 500,000 won as a birth celebration payment. For the second and third child, the birth celebration payments will be doubled to 1 million won and 2 million won, respectively.
As a result, starting next year, the total amount of support provided to families with newborns in Siheung City-including postpartum care expenses and birth celebration payments-will be as follows: 900,000 won for the first child, 1.4 million won for the second child, 2.4 million won for the third child, and 8.4 million won for the fourth child.
The revised ordinance will apply to infants born on or after January 1 next year. However, since the ordinance is scheduled to be promulgated in March, the city will provide support based on the current ordinance until then, and any increased amounts will be paid additionally after the new ordinance is promulgated.
Notably, Siheung City's postpartum care expenses are available to Siheung residents and can be received in addition to the 500,000 won postpartum care payment from Gyeonggi Province. The birth support payment can be applied for at the local community center when registering the birth.

Siheung City Mayor Lim Byeongtaek stated, "This expansion of birth celebration payments is an important starting point for easing the financial burden on families and making Siheung a great place to have and raise children. We will continue to develop a city that is friendly to childbirth through various policies supporting childbirth and childrearing."
