SmartThings Update Rolling Out from Late December
Widest Range of Matter-Compatible Devices Supported
Camera Standard Added to Lighting and Door Locks
Samsung Electronics' smart home platform, SmartThings, will become the first in the industry to apply the 'Matter 1.5' camera standard.
According to Samsung Electronics on December 19, Matter is a global smart home connectivity standard established by the private standards organization CSA (Connectivity Standard Alliance) to enhance device interoperability. With this, SmartThings is expanding its lineup-which already includes Matter-based lighting, door locks, switches, and various sensors-to now support cameras, making it the smart home platform with the broadest range of Matter-compatible devices.
Cameras play a crucial role in building a smart home. By connecting cameras to SmartThings, users can create a safer and more convenient smart home environment. For example, users can monitor their home and surroundings when they are away and check on their pets to take appropriate action remotely.
Samsung Electronics will begin rolling out updates to SmartThings applying Matter 1.5, which was announced by the CSA in November, starting at the end of December.
The Matter 1.5 camera standard supports a variety of camera types for indoor and outdoor security, as well as video doorbells at entryways. It broadly includes convenient features such as live video streaming, two-way communication, motion detection alerts, event video storage, and pan, tilt, and zoom (PTZ) controls.
With this update, camera manufacturers can release cameras that easily integrate with SmartThings using Matter's software development kit (SDK), without needing to adapt to separate application programming interfaces (APIs).
This will also significantly expand the range of camera options available to SmartThings users. Samsung Electronics has already collaborated with global IoT device companies such as Aqara, Arlo, Hue, and Ring to provide a diverse smart home camera experience.
Additionally, Samsung is working with Aqara, Eve, and Ulticam to develop cameras based on the Matter standard. These cameras are scheduled to be released sequentially around March next year.
Jae-Yeon Jung, Vice President of the AI Platform Center at Samsung Electronics, stated, "SmartThings connects products and services from various brands and protocols into a single, unified experience for customers. To further innovate the customer experience, we will continue to expand our collaboration with industry standards, including Matter."
Meanwhile, SmartThings is strengthening partnerships with various companies worldwide based on its open platform strategy. Through its SmartThings certification program, WWST (Works With SmartThings), the platform supports more than 390 partners and over 4,700 devices globally. By rapidly adopting the Matter 1.5 standard, it is bringing 58 types of Matter-compatible devices into customers' daily lives.
Samsung Electronics plans to host 'The First Look' event at CES 2026, the world's largest home appliance and IT exhibition, held in Las Vegas, USA, in January next year, where it will showcase the differentiated AI experiences offered by SmartThings.
