40-Meter Steel Rebar Structure Collapses
Tragedy Strikes During Concrete Pouring
On December 18, a man in his 50s who had been transported in cardiac arrest after being trapped under a collapsed steel rebar structure at the Sinansan Line Section 4-2 construction site near Yeouido Station in Seoul ultimately passed away.
According to police, the deceased, identified as Mr. A (53), was affiliated with a subcontractor of POSCO E&C. At the time of the accident, Mr. A was operating a concrete pump truck in the arched work section of a tunnel 70 meters underground when a structure made of steel rebar, measuring 30 to 40 meters in length and 25 to 29 millimeters in thickness, fell and crushed the vehicle.
Mr. A was rescued by firefighters who responded to the scene and was transported in cardiac arrest. Although he briefly regained breathing, he ultimately died in the emergency room about three hours after the accident occurred.
In the same incident, a man in his 60s sustained minor injuries to his shoulder from falling rebar and was taken to the hospital.
A foreign worker in his 30s suffered abrasions to his wrist and received on-site treatment, but was not transported to the hospital and was therefore not included in the official injury count.
The fire authorities held a briefing at the scene and announced plans to investigate the cause of the falling rebar.
All construction work overseen by POSCO E&C at the site has been suspended until the accident investigation results are released.
