Land surrounding the Gwangju Station area has long remained undeveloped, leading to issues such as illegal dumping and the spread of weeds, which have harmed the city’s appearance. At night, concerns have also been raised about youth delinquency, prompting ongoing calls from local residents for improvements.

In addition, the existing parking lot at Gwangju Station is already insufficient, and with the upcoming closure due to the construction of the double-track railway between Suseo and Gwangju, commuters using the Gyeonggang Line are expected to experience further inconvenience.

In response, the city plans to create a temporary parking lot on commercial land within the station area that can accommodate approximately 800 vehicles. Through this project, the city aims to ease the recurring parking shortages during commuting hours and revitalize long-neglected spaces, thereby creating a more pleasant and safer environment around the station.

The city expects that the establishment of this temporary parking lot will not only expand parking facilities but also serve as a catalyst for improving the station area environment and reorganizing urban spaces.

Mayor Bang Sehwan stated, "It is significant that we are transforming an area that has long been a source of inconvenience and safety concerns for residents into a community facility that citizens can use with peace of mind. The creation of this temporary parking lot will greatly contribute not only to resolving local parking shortages but also to improving the urban environment of the station area. We will continue to carefully address citizen inconveniences and expand community infrastructure to ensure Gwangju grows into an even more pleasant and livable city."
