On December 16, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province held an unveiling ceremony for the signboard of the Gangwon Research and Development Support Group Foundation at Gangwon Technopark, located on Gwahakdanji-ro in Gangneung City, officially announcing the launch of the dedicated control tower for science and technology research and development (R&D) in Gangwon.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by key figures from related organizations, including Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Vice Governor for Economic Affairs and Chairman Kim Gwangrae, Lee Eunyeong, Director of Research Performance and Innovation Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, Lee Hyeongchan, Director of Strategic Industries at Gangwon Province, Kim Namsu, President of the Gangneung Science and Industry Promotion Agency, and Hwang Ukjung, Head of the Global Business Division at Gangwon Technopark.
The Gangwon Research and Development Support Group Foundation is a non-profit organization under the Ministry of Science and ICT, established on November 1, 2025, and serves as the core institution responsible for implementing science and technology policies in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. It systematically carries out research, planning, evaluation, and management of regional science and technology policies, as well as various science and technology promotion projects. The foundation is tasked with strengthening R&D capabilities in the Gangwon region and fostering an innovative ecosystem as an executive agency.
This unveiling ceremony not only announced the official launch of the Gangwon Research and Development Support Group Foundation to the public, but also laid the groundwork for more systematic promotion of science and technology R&D policies and projects in Gangwon by further strengthening the collaborative framework between the Ministry of Science and ICT and Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province.
Kim Gwangrae, Vice Governor for Economic Affairs of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, stated, "The Gangwon Research and Development Support Group Foundation is the first independent corporation in the country dedicated to science and technology in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. It will serve as a key hub that organically connects various innovation entities such as research institutes, universities, and companies within the province," adding, "Gangwon Province will actively support the foundation so that it can stabilize and achieve tangible results."
Going forward, the Gangwon Research and Development Support Group Foundation plans to align with the government's science and technology policy directions by discovering Gangwon-style strategic industries, planning regional innovation R&D projects, and promoting the dissemination of research outcomes. It aims to establish itself as the representative hub institution for the R&D ecosystem in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province.
