Minho Choi, Mayor of Sejong Special Self-Governing City, was elected as the second Chairperson of the Chungcheong Metropolitan Union on December 16.

The city announced that at the first plenary session of the 7th Chungcheong Metropolitan Union Council regular meeting, Mayor Minho Choi was confirmed as the next Chairperson.

The Chungcheong Metropolitan Union, launched on December 18, 2024, as the nation's first special local government, currently has about 60 employees across two offices. The union council consists of 16 members, with four representatives each from Daejeon, Sejong, North Chungcheong, and South Chungcheong.

Mayor Minho Choi will succeed Younghwan Kim, Governor of North Chungcheong Province, as the second Chairperson, serving from December 31, 2025, to June 30, 2026.

In line with the government's "Five Poles, Three Special Zones" national balanced development strategy, the role and necessity of metropolitan administration are becoming increasingly important. The Chungcheong region plans to cooperate as a unified entity to establish a practical balanced development system.

In particular, the main focus will be on: expanding a stable financial base for the metropolitan union; strengthening autonomy through the transfer of central government authority; and enhancing the execution of ultra-wide area cooperative projects.

Mayor Minho Choi stated, "The Chungcheong Metropolitan Union was established to create a new axis for national balanced development. We will further strengthen the growth potential of the Chungcheong region, unite the capabilities of the four cities and provinces, and enhance ultra-wide area cooperation so that the Chungcheong region can grow as a key pillar of national development."
