Recognized for Expanding Mobility Rights for Transportation-Vulnerable Groups
Gwangju City in Gyeonggi Province announced on December 16 that it has been selected as an "Outstanding Institution" in the 2025 Gyeonggi Province Excellence in Transportation Evaluation.
The Gyeonggi Province transportation evaluation is an annual initiative aimed at identifying and promoting outstanding transportation policies. The 31 cities and counties in the province are divided into four groups based on total population size, and a comprehensive assessment is conducted across five areas-general transportation, traffic safety, taxi administration, public transportation, and transportation information-using 31 indicators. The best-performing cities and counties are then selected. Gwangju City falls into Group B, which includes cities with a total population between 330,000 and less than 680,000.
In this year's evaluation, the city was especially recognized for its excellent achievements in the fields of public transportation and traffic safety.
The city's proactive policies to expand the supply of low-floor buses and improve mobility for transportation-vulnerable groups received high marks. Following the addition of 40 low-floor buses last year, the city introduced 61 more this year, bringing the total number of low-floor buses operating in the region to 181.
Furthermore, to reduce carbon emissions and enhance convenience for citizens, the city has set a goal to convert all city buses to eco-friendly low-floor buses by 2028 and is actively working toward this objective.
Additionally, the city received high praise for being the first in the nation to introduce medium-sized low-floor buses to its demand-responsive transport (DRT) service, "Ttok Bus," thereby strengthening mobility rights for transportation-vulnerable groups and laying the foundation for regionally tailored public transportation services.
Mayor Bang Sehwan stated, "Being selected as an outstanding city and county is the result of our continuous efforts to implement diverse transportation policies to improve citizens' mobility rights," adding, "We will continue to do our best to provide convenient and safe transportation services that citizens can truly experience."
