Intensive Wildfire Surveillance and Crackdown Until May 15 Next Year
During wildfire season, the first sparks are now caught in the sky, not on the ground.
Yangsan City in South Gyeongsang Province will intensively operate the 'Wildfire Drone Surveillance Team' for wildfire prevention until May 15 next year.
The city plans to focus operations during the wildfire prevention period to strengthen management of wildfire-prone areas, including blind spots where it is difficult to deploy wildfire watchers.
Thermal imaging forest drones will be used to monitor illegal burning activities in wildfire-prone areas, hiking trails, and high-altitude regions, as well as farmland adjacent to forests. This allows for surveillance of a wide area, significantly reducing manpower and time required, and is expected to greatly contribute to rapid initial response and efficient monitoring activities.
The city will impose fines based on a zero-tolerance policy in accordance with the Forest Protection Act and other regulations when illegal activities are detected, and will also conduct wildfire prevention publicity campaigns in parallel.
Kim Cheolhwan, Director of the Forestry Division, stated, "The best response to wildfires is prevention," adding, "We will do our utmost to prevent and suppress wildfires through intensive drone crackdowns."
