Easing Financial Burden
Monthly Subsidy of 100,000 Won Provided
Wanju County in North Jeolla Province has begun accepting applications for childcare subsidies for multi-child families starting this month, with the program running through 2026.
The county announced on the 15th that, in order to ease the financial burden on multi-child families, it has expanded the eligibility for childcare support from third children to include second children since August. The county now provides a monthly subsidy of 100,000 won per child.
Eligible recipients are second or subsequent children aged 6 to 9 who have resided in the county with their guardian for at least six months. The age range for second children will be expanded gradually each year: in 2026, children aged 8 or younger (born in 2016 or 2017) will be eligible; in 2027, those aged 7 or younger (born between 2017 and 2019); and in 2028, those aged 6 or younger (born between 2018 and 2021). For third or subsequent children, support is provided for those aged 6 to 9, and in 2026, children born between 2016 and 2019 will be eligible.
The county is conducting various promotional activities, including sending informational letters to households with children born in 2016 and 2017, putting up banners, posting notices on the Wanju County website, and distributing materials at village leader meetings.
Guardians can apply at their local town or township administrative welfare center by bringing their ID, a copy of their bankbook, and a certificate of resident registration. Support will begin the month after the application is submitted.
Children who are currently receiving support will not need to reapply in 2026, and support will continue as long as they meet the 'eligibility criteria and standards' for Wanju County’s multi-child family childcare subsidy.
Song Jungtaek, Director of the Social Welfare Division, stated, "We hope that all eligible multi-child families will take advantage of this benefit," adding, "We will continue to expand policies that can be directly felt by multi-child families in the future."
