Yeongdeungpo District in Seoul (District Mayor Choi Hogwon) announced on December 15 that it had communicated with more than 700 residents during the “Open Dialogue with Apartment Residents,” a series of meetings where officials visited 18 apartment complexes in the district to listen to residents’ voices directly.

This dialogue was organized to reflect residents’ opinions in actual policy, based on the core value of local autonomy: “field-oriented communication and participation.” District Mayor Choi Hogwon personally visited apartment complexes, listened to residents’ concerns about inconveniences in daily life, and sought solutions on site.

The meetings were held at 18 apartment complexes and youth housing facilities through November of this year, with 705 participants including resident representatives and local residents, who discussed a wide range of suggestions.

The main suggestions included: ▲ In the transportation sector, improving the traffic environment and parking enforcement; ▲ In the roads and safety sector, road repairs and maintenance of public facilities; ▲ In the apartment support sector, operating expert advisory panels for apartment complexes and improving convenience facilities within complexes; ▲ In the parks and green spaces sector, park maintenance and planting of flowers and trees; and ▲ In the welfare sector, improving senior centers and expanding part-time care and childcare services. The district collected a total of 122 opinions.

The district took immediate action on feasible suggestions from the meetings after on-site inspections and cooperation with relevant agencies, and informed the residents’ representative councils and related organizations of the results and future plans.

The district evaluated that as more resident opinions are being reflected in district policies through prompt field administration, there is a positive trend in building consensus on resident participation and revitalizing the community. Based on this year’s achievements, the district plans to further expand next year’s meetings so that people from various generations can share their opinions together.

Choi Hogwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District, stated, “This meeting was a meaningful opportunity for the administration and residents to meet face-to-face and freely exchange opinions,” adding, “We will continue our efforts to ensure stable management of apartment complexes and to improve the residential environment.”
