Passed Away Just One Day After Fundraising Began
Residents Unite to Raise 3.52 Million Won for the Bereaved Family
It was belatedly revealed that a fundraising campaign to help the head security guard, who passed away after battling cancer at an apartment complex in Busan, was carried out through the voluntary participation of residents.
According to News1 on December 11, the apartment residents' representative council and management office in Suyeong District, Busan, organized a fundraising campaign from December 1 to December 8 to support the late head security guard, Mr. Cho, who retired after being diagnosed with terminal colorectal cancer.
According to the management office, Mr. Cho had worked for about 11 years, from June 2014 to October this year, before retiring after receiving a terminal colorectal cancer diagnosis. When news of his illness spread, residents and management office staff began raising funds to help ease the burden of his medical and living expenses.
Notices posted throughout the apartment complex read, "Head security guard Kangwoo Cho, who has faithfully ensured the safety of our apartment, was unfortunately diagnosed with terminal colorectal cancer and retired. He is currently battling cancer," and, "His family is facing great hardship due to this sudden illness." The notice continued, "We are launching a fundraising campaign out of gratitude and to offer even a small amount of support," and asked for contributions, however small.
However, just one day after the campaign began, on December 2, Mr. Cho passed away. Although the residents' representative council announced the suspension of the fundraising, residents continued to participate in memory of Mr. Cho. As a result, within a short period, 45 households took part, raising a total of 3.52 million won, and the entire amount was delivered to his family on December 8.
The bereaved family expressed their gratitude, saying, "We thank all the residents who remembered the deceased." The residents' representative council stated, "We launched the fundraising campaign as a small gesture of appreciation for someone who protected our families for over 10 years," and added, "This experience reminded us of the warmth of our community."
