Investigations to Continue on Three Cases by Police
The police announced on December 11 that they have transferred the case involving the false document titled "VIP Outrage Is Fabricated," which was handed over by the "Special Counsel for the Fallen Marine," to the Ministry of National Defense Prosecutors' Office.
The "Special Investigation Headquarters for the Three Major Special Counsel Cases" of the National Police Agency stated in a press release that day, "Among the cases received from the Marine Special Counsel, two cases in which the suspects are active-duty military personnel have been transferred to the Ministry of National Defense Prosecutors' Office." A total of five suspects have been handed over to the prosecutors' office.
First, the case involving the distribution of a document titled "The Truth About the Controversy Over the Investigation into the Marine Corps Death in the Line of Duty," which claimed that both the president's outrage and intervention in the investigation were fabricated, has been transferred.
This document, which is 12 pages long, was drafted internally by the Ministry of National Defense in September 2023. It asserts that the initial investigation by the Marine Corps investigative team was inadequate and that the minister's order to withhold the transfer was justified.
It is reported that the draft was initially prepared by the Office of the Military Advisor at the Ministry of National Defense, then revised and supplemented by the Legal Affairs Office and the National Defense Policy Office, before being distributed to some lawmakers from the People Power Party and to the Korea Retired Generals Defense Association, a group of retired military generals with conservative leanings.
The other case involves allegations that records of the arrest warrant for Colonel Park Junghoon, requested by the military prosecutors, were deliberately concealed.
The Special Investigation Headquarters plans to continue investigations into three cases: ▲ allegations of leaking investigative information by the Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency ▲ allegations of dereliction of duty and abuse of authority by Kim Yongwon, Standing Commissioner of the National Human Rights Commission ▲ and allegations of violation of the Attorney-at-Law Act by Lee Jongho, former CEO of Black Pearl Investment.
