'K-Semiconductor Vision and Fostering Strategy Briefing' to Be Held on December 10
Minister Kim Jeong-Kag to Announce Joint Government 'Semiconductor Industry Strategy for the AI Era'
Presenting Vision and Policy Direction for Advancing to Global Top Two
Major Semiconductor Companies Including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to Attend
President Lee Jaemyung will announce a strategy to foster "K-Semiconductors" in order to achieve the goal of becoming one of the world's top three artificial intelligence (AI) powerhouses.
According to the presidential office, on December 10, President Lee will preside over the "K-Semiconductor Vision and Fostering Strategy Briefing for the AI Era" at the Yongsan presidential office, where detailed tasks for advancing to become one of the world's top two global semiconductor leaders will be discussed.
The briefing will be attended by major semiconductor companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, as well as representatives from academia and research institutes in the semiconductor field. From the government, the Ministers of Economy and Finance, Science and ICT, Trade, Industry and Energy, and Education, as well as the Chairmen of the Financial Services Commission and Fair Trade Commission, the Vice Minister of Climate, Energy and Environment, the Deputy Commissioner of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, the Vice Chair of the National AI Strategy Committee, the Presidential Chief of Policy, the Senior Secretary for Economic Growth, the Senior Secretary for AI Future Planning, and the Secretary for Industrial Policy, will participate.
An official from the presidential office explained, "The semiconductor industry has been the key driver of our economic development and is a highly important national strategic industry from the perspective of economic security. Recently, global competition in AI has evolved into a race for supremacy centered around semiconductors. In this context, President Lee is personally presiding over the event to bring together the nation's capabilities to foster the semiconductor industry."
At the briefing, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jeong-Kag will announce the joint government "Semiconductor Industry Strategy for the AI Era." The strategy aims to maintain the world's number one edge in semiconductor manufacturing capabilities to leap into the global top two, and to expand domestic fabless revenue by a factor of ten.
Specifically, the strategy and detailed tasks include: ▲ Establishing technological and production sovereignty in semiconductors by accelerating the development and commercialization of next-generation memory and neural processing units (NPUs); ▲ Strengthening semiconductor capabilities through systems for developing and commercializing on-device AI semiconductors. In addition, strategies and detailed tasks will be presented for expanding the global number one materials, parts, and equipment (MPE) project, establishing a graduate school of semiconductors, expanding the supply chain for materials, parts, equipment, and talent, and creating an innovation belt in the southern region to expand the semiconductor ecosystem.
The subsequent discussion will be divided into three sessions: changes in the industrial landscape in the AI era, measures to enhance semiconductor production capacity, and strategies for developing AI semiconductor technology and fostering the ecosystem. Semiconductor companies, experts, and students will discuss the current state and future direction of the semiconductor industry.
