In China, where the divorce rate has been surging recently, a woman who was having an affair with a married man found herself in a precarious situation when she was about to be caught by the wife. To avoid being discovered, she hung outside the window of a high-rise apartment.

According to The Sun on December 8, a video filmed by a witness captured a woman dressed in white clinging to the railing of the 10th floor, precariously attempting to descend to the floor below.

The footage shows a man, shirtless, exchanging brief words with the woman through the window before disappearing. The woman, holding a mobile phone, then used the building’s exterior pipes and window ledges to move down to the lower floor.

Afterwards, the woman knocked on a neighbor's window to ask for help. A resident who saw her opened the window and pulled her inside, narrowly rescuing her. The media reported that the man pushed the woman out onto the balcony to avoid being caught in the affair after his wife returned home earlier than expected.

The video quickly spread on Chinese social media, sparking widespread attention. Online commenters criticized the incident, saying, "Now that the video has spread, the wife will find out anyway," "Who would want to live like that?" "If he’s so afraid of his wife, how does he even have an affair?" "She could have died if she slipped," "Socially, this is as good as being dead," and "It’s pathetic and ridiculous."

Affairs and Divorces on the Rise in China

Meanwhile, the divorce rate in China continues to climb. According to Chinese government statistics, the divorce rate has quadrupled over the 20 years from 1998 to 2018. In 2023, more than 3.6 million couples filed for divorce.

As the rise in divorces has become a national issue, the Chinese government has taken action. In 2021, the National People’s Congress implemented a mandatory one-month “cooling-off” period for couples negotiating divorce. Under this system, either spouse can cancel the divorce application within 30 days of filing.

Although this measure led to a temporary decrease in the divorce rate, it surged again in 2023, increasing by 25% compared to the previous year. According to AFP, "In China, where the sex industry is thriving, many people engage in sexual relationships with partners other than their spouse," adding, "Recently, affairs and divorces have been rapidly increasing in China."
