Bundles of Cash Spill in the Heart of Euljiro
Taking the Money May Lead to 'Misappropriation of Lost Property' Charges
Near Euljiro 4-ga in Jung-gu, Seoul, 50,000 won bills were scattered on the street, drawing crowds of citizens trying to pick them up. This was not a movie shoot or an AI-generated video-it actually happened.
On December 2, numerous posts and photos about the incident were uploaded to various social networking services. One user described the scene, saying, "I saw a 50,000 won bill on the ground, and when I looked at the road, there were a lot of 50,000 won bills scattered everywhere. As if possessed, I rushed onto the street to pick them up, and even the cars stopped and waited for us."
Another user shared, "I picked them all up and handed them to a police officer. I heard someone threw them from a bus," adding, "People nearby also informed the police about the situation. I'm curious about what story might be behind this."
It was later confirmed that the incident was not an intentional act of someone throwing cash, but rather an accident where a pedestrian crossing the street dropped the money by mistake.
A police official told Yonhap News, "A citizen crossing the street dropped a large amount of cash from their pocket-over 10 million won. The individual explained that the money was needed for work purposes, and since there was no suspicion of a crime, they were allowed to return home."
It is important to note that picking up and keeping money in such situations can be punishable as misappropriation of lost property. According to Article 360 of the Criminal Act, anyone who misappropriates lost property, drift property, or property that has left another person's possession may face up to one year in prison, a fine of up to 3 million won, or a minor fine.
